The River Tees Sculpture Trail

Coatham Dunes, Redcar
Fletcher bank gritstone
Height 3.7m

Standing in isolation on the edge of the sand dunes north of Redcar is a 3.7m gritstone monolith. The circle through the sculpture offers two viewpoints. Look east over the sand dunes and nature reserve to the North Sea or look west to the redundant expanse of the steelworks, and the now demolished blast furnace. It reflects how nature and industry exist side by side in this landscape. The form is simple and striking, referencing shapes found in nature, and the imposing structures of the steelworks.
